Kids Reading to Cats + Face Painting
Give your kids the wonderful and memorable experience of reading to cats! They can practice their reading skills while giving felines special enrichment within the shelter environment. While you're here, your children can even have their faces painted to look like the cats they're sharing stories with. Registration is required as space is limited. To register, please call 301-733-2060.
Who can participate?
Children 10 and under.
When and where will reading take place?
Children can read to cats at HSWC every Thursday in July from 1-4pm. Slots will be 30-minutes long. Children will be assigned to either the HSWC cat resort or multi-purpose room.
How will my child benefit?
Reading aloud is a great way for children to reinforce the skills they learned during the previous school year and to stay sharp for the new academic challenges they’ll face in the upcoming year. Reading to a feline audience (who offers no judgement!) is also a powerful way for shy or struggling students to boost their confidence
How will the cats benefit?
Many cats crave attention and close interaction with people, and this gives them a chance to snuggle up with people and get cozy. Those cats who prefer not to snuggle will still benefit from the oral stimulation.
Do we need to bring anything?
Yes, please bring the books your child will most enjoy reading.
What do I need to do as a parent?
You must sign a waiver and stay with your child at all times.
Can someone else bring my child?
Yes, an adult 18 or older may accompany your child, but we must still have a waiver signed by the parent or legal guardian.
Will there be anything else offered before or after my child reads?
We will offer face painting to children as a reward for reading!
