Polar Bear Plunge On January 11, 2020

The Humane Society of Washington County’s 17th Annual Polar Bear Plunge at Greenbrier State Park is rapidly approaching.  The number of participants and donations continue to grow and excitement is rising for the January 11th event.

The year’s top event sponsors are VerStandig Broadcasting, M.S. Johnston, Hagerstown Honda, and Mountain View Animal Emergency.

“We are incredibly grateful for the community’s continued support for this local winter tradition,” said Colin Berry, Executive Director.  “We’re thrilled to offer a great way for animal lovers to support HSWC’s mission to save lives, and we even have a few fun additions this year!”

The 17th Annual Polar Bear Plunge will take place on Saturday, January 11th at Greenbrier State Park.  Registration and check-in begins at 10:00 a.m., and the plunge is at noon. Costume judging will be held onsite from 10:00 to 11:45 a.m.

Awards will be given for the Most Money Raised, Best Individual Costume, Best Team Costume, and Largest Team of Participants.

This year’s celebrity plunger is Chef Justin Warner from The Food Network. Radio personalities Sugar Ray from 92.1 The Goat and Just Bob and Hollaback Bob from 101.5 BOB Rocks are also taking the plunge, alongside Miss Maryland High United States 2020, Janelle Armstrong.

For the first time, attendees have the opportunity to enjoy a Beer Garden beginning at 10 am. Each $10 ticket earns you admission into the Beer Garden along with two beers. Snacks will be provided and additional beer will be available for purchase. The Garden is open to both plungers and spectators, though you must be 21 years of age or older with a valid ID to enter.

Polar Bear Plunge merchandise, including beanie hats, texting gloves and hand warmers, will be on sale at the event. Guests are encouraged to bring cash, and additional donations are welcome the day of the event.

Interested participants can pre-register for the Polar Bear Plunge online at until noon on January 10th for $25, or register at the event for $30.

Anyone can support HSWC’s largest fundraiser of the year by “sponsoring” one or more plungers. Plungers may be sponsored at Just search for your favorite “polar bear” and make a donation on their personal fundraising page. All proceeds benefit the Humane Society of Washington County.
