Reward Offered for Information on Abandoned Puppy

The Humane Society of Washington County (HSWC) is offering a reward $2,950 for information leading to the identification, filing of criminal charges, and conviction of the person responsible for abandoning a gravely ill puppy in the woods behind Target, located at 17213 Cole Road in Hagerstown. In addition to the reward by the shelter, The Humane Society of the United States has added a $5,000 reward.

CASE: At 8:30 pm on the evening of July 11, HSWC Field Services Officer Isaac Mowery responded to an urgent call regarding a puppy in distress. A citizen found an approximately 6-7 week old puppy, wrapped in a blanket, and abandoned in the wood line behind the Hagerstown Target. Upon the officer’s arrival, it was apparent this puppy was fighting for her life. She was covered in fly eggs and had large amounts of them inside her nostrils and around her mouth. She was emaciated and barely moving. Officer Mowery rushed her to Mountain View Emergency Vet. The diagnosis was starvation and parasites. Treatment was immediately begun. They then transferred the puppy to HSWC’s Veterinary Center for further care. Early this morning, her condition quickly deteriorated.  HSWC’s Veterinary Staff spent hours stabilizing her, during which time the decision was made to name her Hope.  She has received a blood transfusion and is currently in critical condition.

Donations to support Hope’s care and that of other animals in HSWC’s care can be made online or mailed to 13011 Maugansville Road; Hagerstown, MD 21740.
